RESUMO

Contamination of groundwater with chlorinated hydrocarbons has serious adverse effects on human health. As research efforts in this area have expanded, a large body of literature has accumulated. However, traditional review writing suffers from limitations regarding efficiency, quantity, and timeliness, making it difficult to achieve a comprehensive and up-to-date understanding of developments in the field. There is a critical need for new tools to address emerging research challenges. This study evaluated 1619 publications related to this field using VOSviewer and CiteSpace visual tools. An extensive quantitative analysis and global overview of current research hotspots, as well as potential future research directions, were performed by reviewing publications from 2000 to 2022. Over the last 22 years, the USA has produced the most articles, making it the central country in the international collaboration network, with active cooperation with the other 7 most productive countries. Additionally, institutions have played a positive role in promoting the publication of science and technology research. In analyzing the distribution of institutions, it was found that the University of Waterloo conducted the majority of research in this field. This paper also identified the most productive journals, Environmental Science & Technology and Applied and Environmental Microbiology, which published 11,988 and 3253 scientific articles over the past 22 years, respectively. The main technologies are bioremediation and chemical reduction, which have garnered growing attention in academic publishing. Our findings offer a useful resource and a worldwide perspective for scientists engaged in this field, highlighting both the challenges and the possibilities associated with addressing groundwater chlorinated solvent plumes remediation.

RESUMO

Nanozymes, next-generation enzyme-mimicking nanomaterials, have entered an era of rational design; among them, Co-based nanozymes have emerged as captivating players over times. Co-based nanozymes have been developed and have garnered significant attention over the past five years. Their extraordinary properties, including regulatable enzymatic activity, stability, and multifunctionality stemming from magnetic properties, photothermal conversion effects, cavitation effects, and relaxation efficiency, have made Co-based nanozymes a rising star. This review presents the first comprehensive profiling of the Co-based nanozymes in the chemistry, biology, and environmental sciences. The review begins by scrutinizing the various synthetic methods employed for Co-based nanozyme fabrication, such as template and sol-gel methods, highlighting their distinctive merits from a chemical standpoint. Furthermore, a detailed exploration of their wide-ranging applications in biosensing and biomedical therapeutics, as well as their contributions to environmental monitoring and remediation is provided. Notably, drawing inspiration from state-of-the-art techniques such as omics, a comprehensive analysis of Co-based nanozymes is undertaken, employing analogous statistical methodologies to provide valuable guidance. To conclude, a comprehensive outlook on the challenges and prospects for Co-based nanozymes is presented, spanning from microscopic physicochemical mechanisms to macroscopic clinical translational applications.

RESUMO

The aim of this study is to assess and identify the most suitable geospatial interpolation algorithm for environmental sciences. The research focuses on evaluating six different interpolation methods using annual average PM10 concentrations as a reference dataset. The dataset includes measurements obtained from a target air quality network (scenery 1) and a sub-dataset derived from a partitive clustering technique (scenery 2). By comparing the performance of each interpolation algorithm using various indicators, the study aims to determine the most reliable method. The findings reveal that the kriging method demonstrates the highest performance within environmental sciences, with a spatial similarity of approximately 70% between the two scenery datasets. The performance indicators for the kriging method, including RMSE (root mean square error), MAE (mean absolute error), and MAPE (mean absolute percentage error), are measured at 3.2 µg/m3, 10.2 µg/m3, and 7.3%, respectively. This study addresses the existing gap in scientific knowledge regarding the comparison of geospatial interpolation techniques. The findings provide valuable insights for environmental managers and decision-makers, enabling them to implement effective control and mitigation strategies based on reliable geospatial information and data. In summary, this research evaluates and identifies the most suitable geospatial interpolation algorithm for environmental sciences, with the kriging method emerging as the most reliable option. The study's findings contribute to the advancement of knowledge in the field and offer practical implications for environmental management and planning.

RESUMO

Since the adoption of the Paris Agreement in 2015, different countries have implemented various measures to achieve climate governance. This has attracted significant attention from the academic community, resulting in a rapid increase in climate finance literature. This study conducts bibliometric analysis and systematic review to identify the development trends and research hotspots in the field of climate finance. The empirical findings reveal that climate finance research primarily focuses on environmental science, energy fuels, economics, and finance. However, there is limited coverage of climate finance content in finance journals. Moreover, scholars in developing countries show less interest in climate finance compared to them in developed countries, and there is limited cross-regional collaboration among scholars from developing countries. Finally, this paper analyzes clustering results to identify and categorize the focal areas dispersed across research articles, and provides future directions for the advancement of climate finance.

RESUMO

The environmental crises defining the Anthropocene demand ubiquitous mitigation efforts, met with collective support. Yet, disengagement and disbelief surrounding planetary health threats are pervasive, especially in the USA. This scepticism may be influenced by inadequate education addressing the scope and urgency of the planetary health crisis. We analysed current K-12 science standards related to planetary health throughout the USA, assessing their quality and potential predictors of variation. While planetary health education varies widely across the USA with respect to the presence and depth of terms, most science standards neglected to convey these concepts with a sense of urgency. Furthermore, state/territory dominant political party and primary gross domestic product (GDP) contributor were each predictive of the quality of planetary health education. We propose that a nation-wide science standard could fully address the urgency of the planetary health crisis and prevent political bias from influencing the breadth and depth of concepts covered.

RESUMO

Understanding the experiences of Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander (NHPI) students in science courses can help us foster inclusivity and belonging for these often excluded and unacknowledged students. Using social influence theory as a framework, we investigated the intersection between ethnic-racial identity and science identity in NHPI students to better understand their experiences in undergraduate Biology courses. We collected both quantitative and qualitative data and used concurrent triangulation design in our mixed-methods approach. Quantitative data include measures of student pre- and post-course science identity, self-efficacy, alignment with science values, sense of belonging, environmental concern, strength of ethnic-racial identity, and the interaction between ethnic-racial and science identity. We measured environmental concern because NHPI cultures often have strong connections with the environment that may overlap well with environmental science values. Qualitative data included short responses to survey questions that asked students to describe the interaction between their science identity and their ethnicity. We found that NHPI and non-NHPI students do not significantly differ in any construct we measured, nor do they experience different gains across a semester when comparing pre- and post-scores. We also found that NHPI students' feelings concerning the intersection of their ethnic and science identities are varied and complex, with some students expressing feelings of conflict and many others expressing a strengthening relationship between those identities. We discuss implications for instructors and encourage them to acknowledge the community culture of wealth NHPI students bring to the classroom because of their ethnic-racial identities.

RESUMO

Machine learning (ML) is increasingly used in environmental research to process large data sets and decipher complex relationships between system variables. However, due to the lack of familiarity and methodological rigor, inadequate ML studies may lead to spurious conclusions. In this study, we synthesized literature analysis with our own experience and provided a tutorial-like compilation of common pitfalls along with best practice guidelines for environmental ML research. We identified more than 30 key items and provided evidence-based data analysis based on 148 highly cited research articles to exhibit the misconceptions of terminologies, proper sample size and feature size, data enrichment and feature selection, randomness assessment, data leakage management, data splitting, method selection and comparison, model optimization and evaluation, and model explainability and causality. By analyzing good examples on supervised learning and reference modeling paradigms, we hope to help researchers adopt more rigorous data preprocessing and model development standards for more accurate, robust, and practicable model uses in environmental research and applications.

RESUMO

Despite general interest in the concept, there is a lack of formal education systems that foster ocean literacy. Informal marine education programs may be filling this gap; where students undertake unique, immersive learning experiences connected to the marine environment. This paper consolidates information about marine education programs within Australia's temperate region - the Great Southern Reef - and evaluates the extent to which ocean literacy is being delivered through these programs under the banner of Australia's national curriculum. Using the mixed methods approach of a survey and semi-structured interviews, we found that participants are familiar with ocean literacy principles (89.4 %), and half of the informal providers (51 %) reported incorporating these principles into their education programs. We discuss the barriers to teaching and learning about ocean concepts reported by respondents, and argue that formal and informal education programs, working in tandem, can improve school curricula and promote greater ocean literacy.
